Overview

Located in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, lies the majestic mountain Adams Peak.  Measuring an outstanding 7359 feet it is an important facet of Sri Lankan history and is a significant religious location for Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.  Numerous legends have made this mountain very famous and a must see for all travelers to the Paradise island of Sri Lanka.

Right near the summit is the rock formation of a foot print. The Buddhists claim that the foot print belongs to Lord Buddha, while the Hindu’s believe it belongs to Lord Shiva. The Muslims and Christians have their own belief that it belongs to Adam. Due to all these religious beliefs, it attracts a numerous amount of worshippers that make the climb.  However what is phenomenal besides the foot print itself is the actual experience of climbing this mountain. More famously done at night the sunrise at the sunrise is an experience like no other and most people claim that they have an extreme feeling of peace and serenity once they view this sunrise from the top. The adjacent region is mostly forested with no mountains of that size anywhere close by.  This area is a wildlife reserve which is home to elephants, leopards and many endemic species

Adams Peak (Sri Pada) is a religious site surrounded with nature’s bounty so therefore it’s a quiet peaceful area. You may find a few souvenir shops and temples in the village but other than that due to its religious and historical significance it’s peaceful and serene without other activities.

The main pilgrimage season is in the month of April where visitors aim to be at the top by sunrise where the unique shape of the mountain throws a triangular shaped shadow on the surrounding area and quickly moves downwards as the sun rises. Climbing at night is the best experience with the lights leadings the paths into the stars. It is a unique experience on its own and the foot print near the summit just makes the climb all the more worth it. It is an important part of Sri Lankan history with extreme religious significance pertaining to all religions in Sri Lanka and not to mention the abundance of Sri Lankan wild life in the surrounding areas makes Sri Pada (Adams Peak) a must see
