Overview

Sri Lanka has in the recent past developed a new genre of tourism and managed to attract large numbers from the east as well as south East Asia. Sri Lanka cannot boast about their casinos like Las Vegas or Macau however Gambling is legal in licensed casinos and there are about 5 large-scale plush casinos in the commercial capital Colombo and it is growing. All the local casinos have been themed based on the much larger versions in Las Vegas. Sri Lanka has a Bally’s, MGM and even a Bellagio on a much smaller scale.

Since of late the casino tourism has picked up and you would see sometimes busloads of foreigners being let off at the casinos. The Sri Lankan Casino scene is still very new to the locals. Apart from the affluent city crowd of which a fraction would frequent the casinos all else would be either from the expat community or tourists. Most casino’s are open right throughout the day and goes on into the wee hours of the morning.

Casinos in Sri Lanka stick to the traditional casino method where all food and drink is free. All alcohol is also free, however you will be frowned upon if the guest are purely enjoying the free food and drink without playing any games and putting a substantional amount on the betting table.

The games at the casinos are also as you would find anywhere in the world. Blackjack, Roulette, Poker, Baccarat and the slot machines are all available for your enjoyment.

In Sri Lanka in the casinos Roulette has been the favorite and the crowd pleaser for years however blackjack and the others are catching up purely due to the fact that sometimes getting a seat at a roulette table has been known to be getting harder and harder.

Also, the Sri Lankan government realizing the potential this has for tourism has unofficially designated a beautiful city road, which is by the lake as casino row. This will in the future hopefully be a small Macau or a mini version of the main strip in Vegas.
