Overview

There is no place in Sri Lanka quite like the hill capital Kandy. It prides itself on being a cultural and vibrant hub. Some of the biggest attractions in Sri Lanka are in Kandy. The hill capital has beauty, extreme culture and plenty of sights all in a very peaceful and serene setting.

The last kingdom of Sri Lankan history was in Kandy before the British took over. It was an important part of Sri Lankan history and is a place of great religious significance for the Buddhists. It is the second largest city in Sri Lanka and one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka.

Any tourist to Kandy must visit the Temple of the Tooth. It is the biggest attraction in Kandy and is the most sacred of all Buddhist temple as the tooth of Lord Buddha has been housed there since the 16th century. It is one of the holiest places of worship for Buddhists all around the world. Another place is the Royal Palace of Kandy which is the last Royal Palace built in the island. You can also find the National Museum Kandy which has a vast collection of artifacts used by the ancient Kandyans as well the British.

Stroll through the royal botanical gardens which are renowned for its fauna and foliage. The gardens once belonged to the queen and are the best park in the country. It has thousands of varieties of fauna and for the nature lover and horticulturalist this is true paradise. Kandy boasts some of the most beautiful temples in the land. The lankathilake temple, Thegaladadeniya temple and many more which are truly beautiful and definitely worth a visit to see the rich Buddhist history. The Kandy city has the most beautiful lake the Mahaweli located right in the heart of Kandy and in front of the Temple of the tooth.

Kandy although is a capital city in Sri Lanka. It cannot be compared to the modern Colombo. It has many hotels and shops and restaurants. However it is a quieter more serene version of a capital. Also due to its religious significance it is mellow but the beauty and the peace that one finds in Kandy cannot be compared.

Kandy is a word heritage city, I advising do not go for 1 day trip to Kandy because you have to visit & experience lot of places in Kandy. Plan the trip before you go to Kandy. I went lot of times to Kandy but still I could not finish visiting the all the places in Kandy because I spent long time in a one place.
