Overview

Known as the land for sacred springs and spirituality Keerimalai gives all visitors a sense of peace and calm. Its outstanding beauty has withstood the wrath of war and destruction. The whole area has a spiritual outlook of peace and serenity that enters your soul once you arrive.

Although still under a heavy security zone Keerimalai natural springs is known for its water and the rituals. The mineral content in the waters is believed by Hindu’s to have miraculous powers to cure disease. The legend is that a sage was born with a mongoose face and had meditated in a cave in Keerimalai where a divine revelation had told him to bathe in the tank which he did and resulted in his face becoming human.

Keerimalai is 50 feet above sea level and the water flows through an underground fresh water spring. On Aadi Amaavaasai a Hindu religious day Hindu’s come in large numbers to bathe and carry out rituals. The Keerimalai springs are not like the other springs in Sri Lanka. This is as large as a swimming pool and instead of dousing yourself with buckets in this spring you can take a full dip.

On the other side of the tank is the beach with all its beauty and it gives you a surreal setting with the tank on one side and the sea on the other. The Keerimalai area also comes with an open hall which offers the views of the ocean. It is the perfect place to meditate or reflect and is usually used by devotees on Amaavasai. In this area are also two temples one which is the Naguleswaram temple and the other is an abandoned temple which is in practical ruins but still has the most stunning carvings and statues that can still be seen today.

Although the ghost of war has still not left Keerimalai. It’s hot springs and its beauty is still very much alive. It is definitely a beautiful spot to visit, if not sacred and one that is filled with so much tranquility and peace that it cannot be missed.
