Overview

Renowned for its natural beauty such as golden sandy beaches, thick green paddy fields, tea plantations and spice plantations is the town of Matara. This location is a hot spot with lots of tourists that visit from all over the world.  In addition to its natural beauty Matara also has developed into a city with a lot business and commercial districts and good infrastructure. Transportation networks has dramatically improved and travelling to and from Matara has become easier or tourists.

There are many places to visit in Matara such as the Matara Fort. Constructed in 1640 by the Dutch and then used in defense by the Portuguese it is a commanding presence and one of architectural importance. The oldest building in the Fort is the Old Dutch church. There are also other buildings that have been left by the Dutch and the British. Another place to visit is the Dondra or Devinuwara which is the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. There is a light house which was built in 1890 and a small temple built to honor the Hindu God Vishnu at Devinuruwa. The best time to visit is during July where they hold the temple festival. A few kilometers from Matara is Weligama which is known for its beautiful beaches and Aggrabodhi Vihara which is ancient temple built in 3 century BC. Also close to Matara is the charming Tangalle, famous for its aqua marine waters, antique shops, colonial buildings and beach resorts. Matara also has its famous Matara Bridge which is a bridge over the sea that leads you to a rock Buddhist temple.

Matara is a commercial city with all the modern facilities; however it cannot be compared to Colombo when it comes down to entertainment. Night life and fine dining should only be reserved in the hotel. There are lots of shops which sell souvenirs as well as batiks, handicrafts and most importantly precious gems and it is possible to find a few small restaurants around too. Matara with its picturesque beauty is a place that should definitely be visited whilst in Sri Lanka

Forget all the attractions, if you are a food lover you need to try the food in Matara. The rice and curry with a few vegetable dishes is like nothing I have tasted. Was there for 3 days and ate only rice and curry. UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME
