Overview

The Pinnawala elephant orphanage has become a treasured site to visit over the last few decades in Sri Lanka. The war had no bearing on this place and regardless to what condition the country was in at the time anyone who visited Sri Lanka had to visit the elephant orphanage.  The orphanage is also a breeding ground for these magnificent species. The orphanage has been around since 1975 and now has established itself as one of Sri Lanka’s best attractions.  With just under one hundred elephants ranging from newborns to hulking tuskers this place is sight for anyone to visit and be astonished.

The orphanage is built in such a way as to reproduce the natural environment they live in.  To a great extent they have achieved this task apart from a few minor changes such as bottle feeding for the babies, but these slight differences are what have made the orphanage the amazing place it is.
The main attractions for the tourist and local who all get to see the elephants been taken to the river twice a day to take a bath. This is visual that tourists keep coming back for over and over again.  There is also another fantastic attraction here at the orphanage where children and adults both can feed the smaller baby elephants. Children of all ages flock to do this, as this is something a child would never forget and they all find this a truly wonderful experience.
For a nature and animal lover, this is the equivalent of heaven as what you experience here is similar to what you would at the tiger temples in Thailand and India. What you could only dream about come a reality here so over the years Pinnawala has become a favorite amongst both locals and tourists of all ages.
Pinnawala is located just outside Kegalle, which is about 80 kilometers from Colombo. This place can be reached by bus or by renting a car and driving up there. The Orphanage opens at 8.30 AM and closes at 6.00 PM. Bottle feeding starts at 9.15 AM and from that point on thee are activities throughout the day to be seen. The Pinnawala orphanage is a visit that must be made and not missed upon visiting Sri Lanka.

"Unbelievable Experience "

Its an experience worth a life time. Seeing these majestic creatures up close and personal is something out of this world. Fed a infant elephant but that cost me more than the entrance fee, but still worth the experience. One of the BIG reasons I keep coming back to Sri Lanka
