Overview
Anyone and everyone who has a soft spot for elephants cannot leave Sri Lanka without visiting Pinnawala elephant orphanage. It’s an absolute haven for all wild life lovers as they get a chance to see these majestic animals up close and personal. Opened up in 1972 Pinnawala has saved so many baby elephants from the wild after their mothers have been killed due to poaching. They have also saved many elephants who have been maimed and who would not be able to survive in the wild. Pinnawala has the greatest herd of elephants in captivity in the world

These elephants have a wonderful conducive environment at Pinnawala Elephant orphanage and it is now open to the public to see these wonderful creatures of nature and get close to them. It is possible to touch them and feed the babies their milk during the fixed feeding times. Set in twenty five acres these animals are quite used to humans and are therefore quite tame although precaution should be taken to never approach these animals without a mahout by your side. They freely roam and you can watch them in their herds eating and lazing about. The treat of the whole trip is when the elephants are taken to the Ma Oya for their bath. This is usually at 10am and 2pm  and you can watch them as they all splash in the water. It is a wonderful site to see so many elephants together in a lake and one that is surely not to be missed

Pinnawala is a quiet town and it is worth it to drive through Pinnawala and visit the orphanage rather than actually staying there as besides the elephant orphanage there is not much to do in the surrounding areas and Pinnawala can be visited in a day as it is not that far from Colombo. The best is to visit on your way the hill capital of Kandy. Either way a trip to this elephant orphanage is well worth it for the wild life lover or the simple tourist who is looking for something different. It will be an experience to be around these wonderful creatures.
