Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park is a spectacular natural reserve located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of Nuwara Eliya. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country's most treasured natural attractions, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and unique biodiversity. Covering an area of approximately 31.6 square kilometers (12.2 square miles), Horton Plains National Park is characterized by its rolling hills, rugged terrain, and vast grasslands, interspersed with dense montane forests, marshes, and rivers. The park's elevation ranges from 2,100 to 2,300 meters (6,900 to 7,500 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest plateaus in Sri Lanka. One of the most iconic features of Horton Plains is World's End, a sheer cliff that plunges nearly 880 meters (2,890 feet) into the valley below, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can hike along well-marked trails to reach World's End and other scenic viewpoints, including Baker's Falls and Chimney Pool.

Horton Plains is also significant for its cultural and historical heritage, with evidence of prehistoric human habitation dating back thousands of years. The park contains several archaeological sites, including ancient stone tools, rock shelters, and megalithic burial sites, providing insights into the region's early inhabitants. Visitors to Horton Plains National Park can explore the park on foot along a network of well-maintained hiking trails, which offer opportunities for trekking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Due to the park's high elevation, temperatures can be cool and misty, so visitors are advised to come prepared with warm clothing and rain gear.
