Overview
The Siva Devale is located in Polonnaruwa old city between the Royal Palace complex and the sacred Quadrangle. The builder of this Hindu Shrine is not clearly identified. However, it is believed that this was constructed in 13th century AD by South Indian invaders.
This was constructed according to the Pandya architectural style. This Devale has been built mainly with stonework, carried out very precisely and no plastering has been done to connect the stones to each other. You can see the stone Shiva lingam inside, which is still worshiped by people. At present you can’t see the roof of this Devale, but is believed that the roof was constructed using bricks.
