Overview
The Harbour of Trincomalee is the third largest natural harbour in world. The naval strategic importance of Trincomalee had a great role in shaping its history. Many powers tried to capture this important fort, and in the process, fought several sea battles. Currently Sri Lanka is trying to develop Trincomalee as a commercial harbour.

There have been many sea battles to conquer the harbour, and the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and the English, each held it in turn. The harbour is overlooked by terraced highlands, and its entrance is guarded by two headlands. The harbour has 1,630 hectares of water, while the entrance channel is 500 metres wide.

The Port of Trincomalee works on a 24-hour basis. It is open every day of the year, except on May Day, when only day light navigation is open.
Trincomalee’s location, in a less well developed and sparsely populated area, has in the past hampered its own development. Nevertheless plans are under way to develop Trincomalee as a commercial seaport.
